During the Business Forum for Professional Cattle Breeding, Dr. Plamen Marutsov presented his lecture on: Health Management of Adolescent Calves from Birth to Puberty. The topic becomes even more relevant today, when the epidemiological situation in our country requires increased attention to the health of animals on the farm. We are publishing his presentation and key points from it to help farmers and their doctors in this setting.
Dr. Marutsov is categorical:
The fate of a farm depends on breeding better and better heifers to replace the dairy cows.
Health management is based on an integrated, proactive, comprehensive and economically framed approach to preventing diseases and increasing productivity. Health management requires knowledge of nutrition, rearing conditions (comfort) and overall farm management in line with best practices.
In his presentation on the topic, Dr. Marutsov presented:
- Modern trends in feeding calves during their milking period
- Health problems related to eating mistakes
- Main diseases and symptoms
- The most common management mistakes in calf rearing
Extremely useful information was provided by Dr. Marutsov regarding the main methods for raising healthy calves and prevention:
Many problems in the first month can be traced to colostrum feeding lapses and lack of care. Hygiene, good milking practices for colostrum are not followed. With excellent hygiene, the gaps in giving colostrum may not be significant.
