In animal husbandry in general, the selection of the breed that will be the center of a farm business is of prime importance. In turn, it must be chosen in such a way that it is adequate to the conditions that are characteristic of the place, the climate and the possibilities of feeding the animals.

Undoubtedly, the most common breed of beef cattle in the world that farmers rely on is the Hereford. It can be said that this also applies to our country, where the breed is gaining more and more popularity and is becoming preferred for breeding in meat farms.

Origin and main features

The Hereford breed was recognized in England in 1742. It is one of the most adaptable and widespread cattle in the world. They withstand low and high temperatures, different terrains and slopes, as well as cool and humid climates and poorer vegetation.

They are characterized by a friendly disposition, high fertility and easy calving. They have good maternal qualities and intensive growth at a young age.

Physical parameters

The breed is medium-sized, early-ripening. They have a proportional, harmonious and well-developed body in all its parts. Deep and wide. Strongly muscled back, loin, rump and thighs. The head is broad and light. Neck – short, muscular and well attached to the body. The chest is broad, deep and barrel-shaped, with the sternum projecting forward. Limbs are set wide, short and strong. The skin is soft and elastic, the length of the hair cover is according to the season.

Color

Red - brown (dark red) coat with a white head that is transmitted dominantly. The neck, chest, belly, legs, and wrist of the tail are also white. Nose mirror - pink. Hoofs - waxy yellow.

Specific Physical Data

Body height at the withers when fully grown: Cows – 130-140 cm. Bulls - 140-150 cm.

The live weight of the cows is 600-750 kg, and the bulls 900-1150 kg. Live weight at calving is 30-32 kg. Average daily growth 850-950 years, under intensive conditions - 1200 years. Slaughter yield 63-68%. They reach sexual maturity at 10 m, economic maturity at 15 m. First calving at 24 m. Fertility: 90-93%. Duration of operation up to 15 years.
