If someone had told you that an Italian would come to Bulgaria to talk about silages - maybe you wouldn't have believed it or thought it would be something boring. But the reality was quite different. Recently at HL-TopMix we had the pleasure of welcoming Paolo Carcano – a veterinarian, manager at Addcon and, as we have seen for ourselves, a real enthusiast on the subject of... fermentation.
The reason for the visit? Let's talk about something that is often underestimated on farms, but is extremely important to animal health - the benefits and application of inoculants in silages and haylage. If it sounds complicated, it's not. Think of it this way: when you harvest silage, you introduce bacteria inside (good bacteria!) that make fermentation controlled and efficient, as well as prevent reheating. And this means less loss, better taste for the animals and most importantly – more nutritional value in their food.
Paolo Carcano shared valuable practical experience and guidance on topics such as:
What is the ensiling process?
How to recognize the heating of silage - one of the main signs of loss of nutritional value?
How to choose a suitable inoculant according to the needs of the animals?
The best thing was that the conversations did not remain only theoretical. Within two days we toured farms of different profile and scale. We looked at silages on site, talked to farmers, recognized heat and discussed which inoculant was best for each type of forage. Each farmer received specific advice for his farm, silage and animals. A real hands-on approach, as Paolo would say.
"Thank you for the hospitality - it was an absolute pleasure to meet such a motivated and professional team," said Paolo before getting back on the plane to sunny Italy.
We are convinced that the exchange of experience and knowledge with international partners such as Addcon is a key to the sustainable development of livestock breeding in Bulgaria. For us, this was not just an event, but another step towards what we strive to do every day – to be not just producers, but real trusted partners of people who feed their animals with care, attention and dedication.
Now if you're wondering if your silage is heating up, or if you want to level it up with a little help - you know where to find us. :))
